The term “dog days” of summer goes back to the time of ancient Rome. Ancient Romans believed that Sirius, the Dog Star in the constellation Canis Major, added his heat to that of the sun from July 3 to August 11, making the days exceptionally hot. The days were called “dies caniculares” or “Days of the Dog.”
